Revealing Rural 'Others

"The chapters within this book bring together authors from different backgrounds in the academic world - human geography, sociology and social anthropology - and beyond, in an attempt to reveal 'other rurals' - different meanings attached to the countryside, alternative uses of rural space, transgressions of, and challenges to, notions of mainstream rural lifestyles." "Three important aspects of 'otherness' are explored within the book. First, examples are provided of the experiences of certain 'marginalized' groups within rural areas. Secondly, attention is focused on the activities of a number of groups that have attempted recently to challenge mainstream perceptions and usage of the British countryside. Finally, consideration is given to changing rural power structures and some key confrontations between new rural residents and traditional elites."--BOOK JACKET.
